Quick and easy ideas for breakfast when you are in a hurry

Breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day and you may have heard the saying "Breakfast like a King, Lunch like a Prince and Dine like a Pauper".  However, with the busy lifestyles that we often lead it can be quite challenging to fit that in.  In the rush to get out to work in the morning many of us probably skip that all important meal.  Here are a few ideas that may help you fit in a bit of breakfast that will really set you up for the day.

If you find that you don't have time to either make or eat breakfast at home in the morning you could perhaps have something at work, particularly if there's a communal kitchen with a toaster or a microwave.  Have a couple of slices of toast or a bowl of porridge once you've got to work.  You might even have cupboard space in there to keep some breakfast cereal.  Of course it very much depends on your job and where you work.

Flapjacks - another quick breakfast idea Another option would be to have some breakfast on the way to work.  It's not an ideal scenario and I wouldn't recommend trying to have breakfast while you are driving, however, if you take the train, bus or even walk then you could probably take some food with you so that at least you will have had something to start the day.

Quick Breakfast Ideas

Fruit and/or a cereal bar - This is probably the easiest, most convenient way to have a bit of breakfast when you are in a rush.  You can buy multi packs of cereal bars in many places and you could also have a banana or an apple.

Trail mix - I usually buy a 300g bag of trail mix and split it into 6 containers so there is always a healthy snack to grab on my way out in the morning. You can even add it to some Greek yoghurt for a quick healthy breakfast. Alternatively you can buy a big bag of nuts and mixed fruit and create your own trail mix.

Flapjacks - These make a good breakfast and they can be made quite quickly in the microwave the night before.  You'll probably have enough for the whole week and it only takes 10 minutes!  Melt 100g of butter, 4 tablespoons of golden syrup in a pyrex jug.  Stir in 180g of porridge oats then cook on the highest setting for 3 minutes.  It will have increased in volume when it is ready.  Spread it out on a tray whilst hot and allow to cool.  To make things easier you can use a sharp knife to divide into portions before it has completely cooled.  You can add other ingredients to make it more interesting such as cinnamon and raisins, nuts or how about a layer of melted chocolate on top?

Bircher muesli - Another quick breakfast which is easily prepared the night before.  Put some porridge oats in a plastic container and pour enough apple juice for it to soak up, you could also add a grated apple, then chill in the fridge over night.  In the morning just spoon some in to a separate container, add some plain yogurt, honey or cinnamon and some stewed, fresh or dried fruit or nuts.  The possibilities are endless, try some different variations.
