Space saving ideas to help organise your fridge

The fridge is perhaps one of the smallest storage spaces in the house and it can become full very quickly making finding what you want more difficult and finding space for more shopping can be quite a task.  Here's a few tips to help you make the most of fridge space.

Clean out the fridge - Remove any out of date foodstuffs.  Sometimes the contents of your fridge can get a bit out of hand and things can be forgotten about.  Check the date and condition of any bottles and jars of sauces that are lurking at the back.  If it's usable then fine, otherwise give it a good burial!  Some items really don't need to be in the fridge at all, so only store them there if that's where they need to be.

Think carefully about the quantities of certain things you use as larger bottles and containers take up more space and if unused can spoil.  Whilst you can save money buying in bulk if it doesn't get used and goes off then you aren't saving anything.

Consider using plastic fridge baskets for items such as salads and vegetables.  It's far easier to find these things if they are all in one place, for example tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce etc, You can also use these handy containers to keep snacks for the kids all in one place so they don't have to rummage around and make a mess.

Packaging can be one of the biggest space hogs in the fridge.  You can help to eliminate this problem by transferring products into smaller containers such as plastic takeaway trays.  These come in handy when freezing portions of food, but they can also be used as temporary stackable storage boxes in the fridge.  Some packaging isn't really suitable for keeping some food in anyway as it can cause condensation, for example pre-packaged bags salad leaves, they keep better in a plastic container lined with a paper towel.

You could also quite possibly adjust the shelves in your fridge to make better use of the space.  For example a larger gap at the bottom for big bottles and a narrower gap at the top for small packages.
